Naillac Gate, Rhodes, Greece

I was disappointed when our boat was stalled in Rhodes due to a storm on the Mediterranean. Having explored the tourist-heavy old town already, I didn’t see much to inspire a second day of sightseeing. But when the storm cleared, the city’s ancient walls and gates shone in the sunshine, and I discovered the old Naillac Gate, practically abandoned except for the resident coven of feral cats.  The eroded stones gave the castle a skeletal appearance, and the ruined walls opened out upon the deep cyan of the Aegean Sea.
