Yet another French city whose name, when I mentioned it was on my to-see list, was greeted with shrugs. But Lille had a great deal more life to it than the critics led me to believe. The historic centre was gorgeous, and the 18th century side streets, like this one, had that lived in look that North American architecture sorely lacks.
